Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences Anthem
We were thrilled when Robin Scheines approached us to create an anthem video for Carnegie Mellon University’s Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences. Blending hand-drawn illustration and photographic collage with tactile textures, the film celebrates the human stories and interdisciplinary thinking at the heart of the humanities.

To celebrate the intricate beauty of the humanities, we approached the visuals through an evocative blend of handmade illustration and photographic collage, drawing directly from the layered, thoughtful nature of academic inquiry.
We layered paper textures, scanned materials, and collage to reflect the academic world—books, journals, notes, essays. Torn edges, visible folds, and analog materials add an archival, lived-in quality that resonates with the idea of knowledge passed down, debated, and reinterpreted.
To honor Andrew Carnegie’s Scottish heritage and ties to the school’s historical foundation, a subtle yet meaningful motif of plaid patterns was woven into the frames. The overall results add a deeper visual thread to the narrative.
Drawing inspiration from stop-motion, we intentionally used a low frame rate to create a handmade, thoughtful rhythm. Together, these choices shape a crafted, human-centered aesthetic that reflects the interdisciplinary nature of academic inquiry and the stories at the heart of the humanities.
